Borough Market final animation

Here is my final animation for this final unit of this second year as an illustrator student! I am very happy with this achievement, it has been a long and beneficial project for my practice. I have learnt a lot about animation and also computer programs, which in the past I was not familiar and confident with. I have managed my time well to have sufficient time to learn and to test different ways to animate, then I found a suitable way to animate my drawings in the way I was looking for. I have used traditional animation as well as "computer animation" using Adobe Photoshop and After Effects programs. I wish to have another chance to work on an animation in the future, where working collaboratively could be considered.

All the sounds on this animation have been recorded on location at the Borough market by myself. I really wanted this animation to reflect the atmosphere of the market, thus I thought using 100% of the actual sounds would make the animation more authentic. I wish I could have recorded more sounds of the place being very busy at lunch time, then I think it would have given even more the feeling of the place being active.

Animation on After Effects

This is the outcome of a long day spent on the computer... I have made this animation with After Effects, using my sketchbook drawings from the Borough Market reportage. I have worked with the 3D plan, moving the people across the sketchbook page.

Sketchbook planning

As usual I have been developing my work in a sketchbook. Daily planning, step by step working process trying not to miss a part of this project!

After Effects + hand drawn outcomes

I have been working on these animations associating hand drawn animation and After Effects, using drawings from my sketchbooks from the Borough Market. I was quite worried to work with this program that seemed really complicated to me, however I have managed to work with it and make something I am happy with! I have learned a lot within this unit and these are going to be part of the final animation!

Fish

Here is my second hand drawn animation for this project. It represents a fish stall that was at the Borough Market in London. I used a pen brush and colour pencil.

Walk animation

Here is my first animation test using after effects with sounds. I recorded the soundtrack of the video with the help of Ben my classmate, then reworked them on Adobe Audition.

Storyboard

Here is the final Storyboard! I have been developing the story and separated it in different scenes, the step is to do an animatic for the next week critique.

Here is the first test on After Effects using my sketchbook drawings into an animation.

Storyboard

This is the storyboard I have done planning my animation, my aim is to start animating over the next week. I tried to generate ideas quickly from my sketchbook drawings from the market. I found it quite easy to find ideas as I have already planned the story from the day spent in the Borough market.

One more rotoscoping animation that I have done. Could be useful for me when I will need to animate a person walking in my animation.

Animation Workshop

My first animation using Adobe Flash.

Reportage - Borough Market London

I constantly use sketchbooks to reflect personal thoughts and a way of expression, as a language and a tool to observe reality and to understand it better. For this project, my aim is to bring those drawings to life; I want to create an animation from a reportage converging people and place. I have documented the Borough Market in London progressing throughout the day from early morning. My intention for this unit is to explore a space through visual documentation with a screen based media, which I haven’t investigated into yet. This place, the market, has been explored through observational drawings, which will be developed into a hand drawn animation.

This Saturday the 6th of April, I took the coach early morning to arrive in London before the Borough market opens, to document the and observe the vendors’ activities before and while people come to visit. I spent about 10 hours on location documenting and recording sounds of the activity moving throughout the day. All the drawings I have made will be the starting point of the hand drawn animation I will produce.
